Various Gridworks
I have worked in a variety of grids and graph papers, from millimeter squares (28/inch) to 10/inch layouts. I have utilized variations of grids with multiple sides and irregulare layouts. And I have drawn my own grids.
Shown here is a wide selection of these efforts, some with explanations and some with just the visual design.
I have rarely used a computer to create these, but there are a few exceptions that will be noted.
Creativity has a broad arena and I enjoy working with whatever aspects I am able.
Dimensions of Quadral Spectrum
A commissioned colored pencil drawing on a sheet of 16/inch blue grid graph paper. The design is comprised entirely of 5x5 patterns within the overall larger surface grid.It is approximately eight inches square and took several weeks to create in the 1970's.
Catdreams
This was a commissioned piece for a friend who wanted a drawing of his Momma cat and her three kittens. I'd never done a real life drawing before and was working with patterns on grids at the time so I came up with the idea to do a representational working of the cats surrounded by a bordering pattern effort.
Caution
I did this for the writer Dean Koontz as a gift for inscribing a book of his for my daughter.
Dwiphtra (I suppose)
This was done with a technique I refer to as a 'colorblend' where I color in alternating squares with gradual alteration of the colors, from light to dark and from one tone to another transitioning into totally different colors. The black to gray transitions that appear in the piece illustrates the effectiveness of this technique quite well.
The title is self-reflective of my thoughts for the name, finally deciding after weighing several choices.
It is on a 16/inch grid, is approximately 6 inches square and was done in 1990.
Abalone Crystal
A color pencil drawing with a few fluorescent colors to make it more vivid.
This was a wedding gift for my step-daughter and her husband.
Sweetness
I did this for Walter Payton as a 'Thank You' for many autographs he gave when my family lived across the street from the Chicago Bears practice facility in Lake Forest, Illinois.
Spontaneous Chromograph
This is a fun little piece that was orignally a color testing area for a larger drawing.
I have done several of this type of work during the course of my creative efforts, finding that testing shades and tones of pencils and markers produces interesting designs unto themselves.
There is something quite pleasing to my eye with this simple work in the imbalanced balance and color-plays it presents.
Wraptic Plosion
A commission for a friend. I did two other commissions for him, both of which are displayed in the Major Works pages: Dimensions In 'N' Space and Psidereal Matrix.
Heroism
I did this for my friend Jenny Spangler who won the US Marathon Trials for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics.
